This fabric, known also as elastane or Lycra, has become an immensely popular fabric since its invention by J. Shivers. The catchy name is actually the letters of “expands” mixed up (an anagram).

Apart from looking superbly glam spandex is sought after due to its strength and elasticity. It is stretchable up to five times its length and is a sturdier material than natural rubber. Spandex also dries very fast compared to other materials and will take up its original shape after stretching.
Most garments that contain spandex incorporate it in a small percentage, so its presence may go unnoticed. It is most commonly mixed with cotton or polyester and the resulting materials retain much of their original look and feel while becoming more elastic. Material patented by DuPont USA in 1958.
Brand names referring to elastene material like spandex include: LYCRA, CREORA, ROICA, DORLASTAN, LINEL adn ESPA.
